"What is global communication and how has it promoted the globalization witnessed in the past ten years?"
By: Emily Schleif
Where would we be in the world today if we didn’t have the technology we have today? Who knows, but in the past ten years the global communication has grown at a substantial amount. Global communication has had a tremendous impact on the world today, from helping eliminate distance, increasing opportunities all over the globe, but also with all the advantages there are disadvantages.
According to Belinda Dickson, globalization communication is the process of transmitting and receiving info on a world wide scale (Dickson, 2004) . The first form of global communication was Morse code. Morse code was invented by Samuel Morse. He conceived the basic idea of an electromagnetic telegraph in 1832, and produced the first working telegraph set in 1836 (Ager, 2008) . Other types of global communication are television, radio, satellites, internet, and video.
The global communication has expanded massively in the past ten years. It has allowed people to communicate with other people on the other side of the world. Television has made it possible for everyone in the world to see what is going on in other countries and to keep them updated with the latest news and information.
One of the best ways for global communication is through the internet. In the classroom teachers and professors want students to learn about several different topics and one way they do that is through the internet. The internet offers vast majority of information for everyone around the world that is seeking knowledge. It is said that in 2009 there were two hundred and thirty four million websites on the internet. (Interent 2009 in Numbers, 2010)
Some advantages of global communication are making the world a smaller place, increasing business opportunities and improving cultural education
The disadvantages of global communication are, unemployment, privacy, lack of job security, and dominant culture (Some advantages and disadvantages of information technology, 2008) . The reason unemployment is a disadvantage is because technology is replacing jobs. Because technology is changing and improving everyday it is making job security hard to control. Employees have to keep learning and adapting to new technology if they want to keep up in the technological society today. The internet opens up the world to other cultures all over the world. It allows for influence on other cultures with behavior, clothing, and trends.
Global communication has made it possible for an enormous amount of things to happen in the past ten years. It has led countries to communicate to work on issues together, businesses to flourish, students to further their education, teenagers and young adults to make friends on the other side of the world, and to improve our lives in many ways. There are disadvantages to global communication but we will find a way overcome them and so that they will no longer be a problem. In the end global communication won’t stop growing, it will continue to grow and we grow with it and adapt to it.
