Global Communication Paper

"What is global communication and how has it promoted the globalization witnessed in the past ten years?"
By: Emily Schleif

Where would we be in the world today if we didn’t have the technology we have today? Who knows, but in the past ten years the global communication has grown at a substantial amount. Global communication has had a tremendous impact on the world today, from helping eliminate distance, increasing opportunities all over the globe, but also with all the advantages there are disadvantages.
According to Belinda Dickson, globalization communication is the process of transmitting and receiving info on a world wide scale  (Dickson, 2004).  The first form of global communication was Morse code. Morse code was invented by Samuel Morse. He conceived the basic idea of an electromagnetic telegraph in 1832, and produced the first working telegraph set in 1836 (Ager, 2008). Other types of global communication are television, radio, satellites, internet, and video.
The global communication has expanded massively in the past ten years. It has allowed people to communicate with other people on the other side of the world.  Television has made it possible for everyone in the world to see what is going on in other countries and to keep them updated with the latest news and information.
One of the best ways for global communication is through the internet. In the classroom teachers and professors want students to learn about several different topics and one way they do that is through the internet.  The internet offers vast majority of information for everyone around the world that is seeking knowledge. It is said that in 2009 there were two hundred and thirty four million websites on the internet. (Interent 2009 in Numbers, 2010)

Some advantages of global communication are making the world a smaller place, increasing business opportunities and improving cultural education (The Advantages of Global Communication, 1991 ). Even though China is on the other side of the world global communication made it possible to connect with people within minutes or even seconds when they are far away.  Global communication has increased business opportunities by being able to communicate and make relationships with other business around the world. That opens up the trading market for more possible business deals. In classrooms teachers and professors want students to learn about other cultures, one way they do that is through the internet.  The internet offers vast majority of information for everyone around the world that is seeking knowledge.
The disadvantages of global communication are, unemployment, privacy, lack of job security, and dominant culture (Some advantages and disadvantages of information technology, 2008). The reason unemployment is a disadvantage is because technology is replacing jobs.  Because technology is changing and improving everyday it is making job security hard to control. Employees have to keep learning and adapting to new technology if they want to keep up in the technological society today.  The internet opens up the world to other cultures all over the world. It allows for influence on other cultures with behavior, clothing, and trends.
Global communication has made it possible for an enormous amount of things to happen in the past ten years. It has led countries to communicate to work on issues together, businesses to flourish, students to further their education, teenagers and young adults to make friends on the other side of the world, and to improve our lives in many ways. There are disadvantages to global communication but we will find a way overcome them and so that they will no longer be a problem.  In the end global communication won’t stop growing, it will continue to grow and we grow with it and adapt to it.

On the Diana Hacker website the grammar exercises were very helpful. The help you learn step by step about grammar. The grammar exercises included active vs passive verbs, parallelism, needed words, mixed constructions, misplaced modifiers, dangling modifiers, shifts, choppy sentences, and subordination. All these grammar exercises was a great review from high school. It helped me remember something that I forgot or just don't think about anymore.
The three things that I learn were subordination, needed words, and dangling modifiers.
An example of subordination is, the highly specialized medical training, called a "residency," usually takes four year to complete. This is a good example because helps show that the idea is being emphasized and the subject and the verb are independent.
Needed words helped me understand that something we add words while writing that we don't necessary need, they are just fillers and other time we don't have enough words to get our point across. The sentence flows better when there are certain words filled in or taken out.
Before today I've never heard of dangling modifiers. I found this very interesting. It was helpful when writing that the opening statement doesn't just dangle that it flows together and describes what is happening. An example is, reaching the heart, the surgeon performed a bypass on several blocked arteries. In this sentence is shows who's doing the action and not leaving it open ended.
Overall, I found that this was very helpful review with grammar.
